Workshop Description:
Bondage Fundamentals is an four-session introductory course designed for those new to rope bondage, providing foundational skills, terminology, and safety practices. The course focuses on floor-based rope work, influenced primarily by Japanese bondage (shibari/kinbaku), while integrating techniques from various traditions. Participants will learn essential ties, structural elements, and the principles of Risk-Aware Consensual Kink (RACK) to foster safer practice. Emphasis on communication, consent, pleasure, and injury prevention, including awareness of possible bodily and emotional trauma. By the end of the course, students will have the confidence to continue their bondage education independently or in advanced non-suspension classes. For in-depth information about workshop learning objectives and the course in general, check out the course syllabus.
Skill level and Prerequisites:
This course is meant to introduce you to rope bondage. It assumes that you have never touched a rope before and don’t know any bondage terminology. A familiarity with a single column tie is extremely helpful, but not at all necessary. By the end of the course, you will have the skill to continue studying bondage on your own using online resources and/or enrolling in any non-suspension classes offered anywhere.
(Note: If you have some experience with bondage but want solidify your fundamentals, this course will still be useful to you. We move fast, and often integrate intermediate technique and ties into a beginner-focused curriculum. If you have questions or concerns about your skill level in relation to the course, please note them below in the "rope experience" question.)
Students must purchase the following:
--1 pair safety shears (also called “EMT Shears;” be sure to get left-handed shears if you’re left handed)
--5 hanks (i.e., lengths) of jute or nylon rope, 8 meters long, 6mm in diameter
--Optionally, 1 piece of cloth to use as a blindfold/gag (bandana or tenugui suggested)
For in-depth info about how and why to purchase these materials, check out syllabus sections on "What You’ll Need to Buy" and "Appendix: What am I buying and why?"
